Moving to Tulsa: Remote Workers Feel ‘It’s Like Being An Expat’

In 2020, Cynthia Rollins, who worked remotely in San Francisco, was feeling boxed in her tiny apartment. Then she found out about Tulsa Remote, which offers $10,000 to remote workers to move to Tulsa, Oklahoma. Even though she didn’t know anyone in Tulsa, Rollins decided to go for it and moved there in November 2020.

Tulsa Remote shares that most people who join plan to stay for a year, but 88% actually end up staying longer, showing how much they like it there.

Tawny Ann De La Peña, who switched from journalism to coaching, moved to Tulsa in 2021 with Tulsa Remote. She really likes Tulsa and says it’s even better than big cities like New York and LA, where she used to live.

After the pandemic, a lot of people left California. From April 2020 to July 2022, about 700,000 more people moved out of California than moved in.

Rollins is enjoying a much more chill life in Tulsa, loving the easy parking and how you can get anywhere in the city quickly. She’s way less stressed than when she was in San Francisco.

De La Peña also loves the relaxed vibe in Tulsa. It gives her the space to grow her business and take breaks when she needs to, which was hard in her busy life before.
